It was a delightful opening day as the Monaco Polo Team made it's grand debut in the NBC 10 Newport International Polo Series XXIV, Presented by BMW on Saturday June 6 at 5pm, on the polo grounds at Glen Farm. Although USA started strong to hold the lead, Monaco rounded the fifth chukker scoring eight goals to keep a close behind and ending the match with a final score of 17 to 13.
The match began with the raising of the Monaco flag and national anthem to welcome the team representing the 31st nation to play in the Polo Series.
Playing for Monaco was Francesco Mitrano, Kiko Casanova, Ivan Weiss and Aly Kashef. Sam Clemens, Heather Souto, Dan Keating and Jim DeAngelis represented team USA.
The first chukker ended two to one, led by USA, with both goals scored by Keating and a goal for Monaco by Kashef. During the second chukker, USA burst into action scoring five more goals, while Kashef snuck, yet again, another goal past the USA’s defense. USA pulled further ahead with three more goals, as Kashef scored a third time for Monaco on a penalty shot, ending the third chukker with a half-time score of USA 10, Monaco 3.
Monaco regrouped at half-time and was out with Kashef and Weiss scoring two more goals for Monaco, and USA scoring another three goals by the end of the bell in the fourth chukker. Monaco began to close the gap in the fifth chukker with two goals by Casanova and two by Kashef, while Souto snuck in one point for USA. Rounding out the final chukker, Monaco mustered another four goals by Mitrano, Casanova and Kashef, while USA pushed through to victory with three final goals by Clemens and DeAngelis, leading the USA to a season opening win.
One lucky spectator was awarded the weekly door prize from Rockport, as well as a prize for the Best Tailgate, sponsored by our friends at Stella Artois.
