Newport Reclaims Shreve Crump & Low Cup from Boston

Positive Energy Polo Lounge Opens

Date:    Saturday, June 27, 2015

Gloomy skies didn’t stop spectators from piling into the polo grounds to support Newport as the home team went head to head against Boston on Saturday, June 27, to reclaim the Shreve Crump & Low Cup in a final score of 8 to 5. The match is the first of the City Series, a highlight of the Newport International Polo Series presented by your Rhode Island BMW, featuring challengers from around the US in classic 6-chukker matches against the home team.

Representing Boston this year was Jim Stanton at #1, Dami Belardinelli at #2, Sergio Corro at #3, and Estanislao Robledo-Punch at #4. Playing for Newport was Heather Souto at #1, Charlie Bullis at #2, Dan Keating at #3, and Dave Bullis at #4.

Newport hit the ground running as Souto snuck a goal past Boston’s defense in the first chukker. Newport continued their sprint as they tallied three more goals in the second chukker by C. Bullis (1) and Keating (2), but Boston came into motion scoring a point for the team on a penalty hit. The teams were tight on their defense as they continued to duke it out in the third chukker, until Keating whacked another ball through the posts giving Newport one more point and ending the third chukker with a half-time score of 5 to 1.

Both teams recharged during the break and headed to the field where Newport started the fourth chukker with two goals by Souto, one by a penalty hit. Boston kept up with the pace and Robledo-Punch snuck a goal past Newport’s defense before the bell. Both teams were at each other’s heels during the fifth chukker as Keating landed another goal for Newport, and Robledo-Punch for Boston on a penalty hit. Boston lunged in the sixth chukker in hopes to close the gap with two goals by Stanton and Belardinelli, but fell short as the final bell rang leaving Newport to take the cup with a final score of 8 to 5.

One lucky spectator was awarded the weekly door prize from Rockport, and a group in spaces 41 and 42 caught the judges’ eye, taking home the picnic trunk from Stella Artois. The 2-hour match concluded with the Veuve Clicquot Champagne Toast & Trophy presentation of the Shreve Crump & Low Cup, autograph signing and cocktail hour to mingle with the players.

Minutes from downtown Newport, the International Polo Grounds are located at historic Glen Farm, 715 East Main Road (Rte. 138) in Portsmouth.   This bucolic setting is the last 100 acres of what was once a 700-acre manorial farm whose settlement dates back to the 1600's. Its classical stone barns from the Gilded Age and its park-like grounds were rehabilitated by Keating, and thrive today as an equestrian & community recreational property, and home of the Polo Series.
