The Newport Interscholastic Polo Team has brought home the Sportsmanship Award and an All Star recognition from the United States Polo Association’s Northeast Preliminary Tournament, which concluded yesterday at Cornell University’s Oxley Equestrian Center in Ithaca, NY. Competing in its first season, Newport placed 3rd in the tournament. Newport’s players, hailing from the Williams School in New London, CT, are Alden Schuman, Miles Schuman and Liam Griscom. Liam Griscom was named the Sportsmanship Award recipient, by fellow players & tournament officials, and Miles Schuman was named to the All Star Team. Host team, Cornell took 1st place in the weekend-long tournament, which was the opening round of this season’s interscholastic playoffs, and will advance to the Northeast Regional Tournament later this month, from which the winning team will represent the Northeast region at the US National Championship in March. The Newport Interscholastic Polo program includes boys & girls in grades 7-12, and welcomes interested new students. Teams compete against other teams in the Northeast during the autumn semester, and participate in winter tournaments organized by the United States Polo Association. Coaching and instruction is provided by Dan Keating at Newport Polo’s (private) instructional facility in Portsmouth, RI throughout the year, including summer Youth Polo Camp. “We hope these kids continue to play polo while earning a degree at one of 40 universities in the US that offer polo programs,” explained Dan Keating, founder and president of the Newport Polo Club.
