2015 Overseas Report

From Snow Polo to Beach Polo

Date:    Thursday, April 30, 2015

During the winter, Newport Polo players travel overseas to visit international rivals and compete on foreign soil. It is an exciting challenge and unique experience, requiring good horsemanship, knowledge of the game and an adventurous attitude. Gratulacje' to the 6-player USA squad from Newport Polo, sanctioned by the USPA to compete in the Bukovina Snow Polo Masters last January in the chic Tatra Mountain ski resort of southern Poland. Our men were victorious 6:4 and our women overcame a few hot mounts for a well-fought 4:5 loss. Hats off to the adventurous group including Alex King, Sam Clemens, Yaz Grotnik, Jenny Elkus, Laurel Howe and Stefanie Boyer. In March, the annual Jamaican tour came as a welcome relief to the relentless winter battering for John Wigdahl, Heather Rasulis, Minnie Keating and Dan Keating who hastened to the Caribbean, despite the challenges that awaited an off-season squad. With an overdose of Jamaican hospitality, the Americans managed to outplay their Kingston hosts and enjoy all the earthly delights of their balmy clime. As Winston Churchill is oft quoted, "a polo handicap is a passport to the world".
