There wasn’t a cloud in the sky when Newport took to the field on Saturday, August 1st to go head-to-head against Palm Beach in the City Series. The City Series is part of the Newport International Polo Series, featuring challengers from rival cities around the U.S. playing in six-chukker matches against the Newport home team, and presented by your Rhode Island BMW Centers.
Spectators enjoyed one of our fastest matches of the season as both teams brought their A-game and kept the score close throughout all six chukkers. But the Sunshine State saved their best tricks for last, pushing ahead and scoring four points in the last chukker, and riding away with a winning score of 15 to 12.
Representing Palm Beach was Aga Morgan in the #1 position, CB Scherer in #2, Marcella Cabeza in #3, and World Champion John Wigdahl in #4.
Sporting blue for your favorite home team was father-daughter duo Minnie and Dan Keating in the #1 and #2 positions, Jim DeAngelis in #3, and Dave Bullis in #4.
Palm Beach wasted no time in the first chukker as all four teammates scored a point, all while keeping Newport completely out of goal for the full seven minutes. DeAngelis and Bullis were ready to ride in the second chukker, both scoring points for the home team. Defense was high on both sides, as Newport tried keeping Palm Beach out of goal, but Scherer was able to slip a ball through the posts before the bell. Newport took advantage of the third chukker as M. Keating, D. Keating (2) and DeAngelis (3) all scored goals for the team, leaving no time for rest as they hiked up their defense and left Palm Beach scoreless as the final bell rang, sending both teams off into a half-time score of 8 to 5.
Both teams regrouped, switched ponies, and were out on the field ready to ride for the second half of the match. The fourth chukker was a tie as Palm Beach tried closing the gap with goals by Scherer (2) and Cabeza, but Newport was there to keep the lead as both M. and D. Keating and DeAngelis scored for the team. Palm Beach saved their energy for the final two chukkers as Scherer, Cabeza and Wigdahl all rode past Newport’s defense to score and close the gap in the fifth chukker, and block the home team from landing any points to keep their lead. The sixth and final chukker was a traditional face-off as both teams were at a tie with only seven minutes left to steal the win. Newport’s Bullis whacked the ball through the goal, pushing the team ahead by one point, with hopes to keep defense strong for the rest of the chukker. But Palm Beach shocked the crowd as Scherer burst into action with a hat-trick and three points for his team, followed by a final goal by Morgan, pushing Palm Beach ahead by three points and riding away with a winning score of 15 to 12.
A weekly door prize drawing of a pair of shoes from Rockport was awarded to one lucky winner, and spot 16 won Best Tailgate and a prize Tailgate Trunk from Stella Artois. The match concluded with the Veuve Clicquot Champagne Toast & Trophy Presentation, with prize giving by Patrick Murphy, Sales Engineer for Business Services at Cox Communications, along with autograph signing and cocktail hour to mingle with the players.
