Date:    Wednesday, December 9, 2015

Back by popular demand, Newport Polo is pleased to participate in the 28th annual Newport Winter Festival by hosting Beach Polo on Feb. 20 & 21 at 1pm, weather permitting. The exhibition polo event is a an entertaining outdoor spectator event at Easton’s Beach (locally known as 1st Beach) at 175 Memorial Boulevard in Newport, RI.  Directions.  For more information, or weather updates, please call (401) 846-0200.

Beach Polo will feature 2 teams competing each day in a match composed of 4 periods of play, 7 minutes per period. In between periods, the players change to fresh horses. In total, each match will have duration of about 1+ hour during low tide. Spectators are encouraged to witness the fast-paced contests and cheer on the teams, playing on finely tuned thoroughbred mounts.

“This event is a nice attraction for our beach during the winter season,” explains Eric Reis, Newport Beach Manager. All regular off-season beach rules and restrictions will be in effect. Parking is available at no charge at the parking lots for Easton's Beach.

Beach Polo is a low-impact, eco-friendly exhibition on the sand in the intertidal area of the beach, beginning around 1pm in conjunction with the Newport Winter Festival.  Horses are accustomed to sand footing in their natural habitats all over the world, including the desert southwest.  The thoroughbread polo ponies are highly fit and exercised in arena polo, played on similar footing materials.  The players are from the Newport Polo Club.

“The Newport Polo Club is grateful to the City of Newport for its hospitality, and to all who make this event possible, so that people of all ages can get outdoors to take in the fresh air and spectacle of horsemanship and breath-taking panoramas on Newport’s beautiful beaches when the ponies and players put on a polo match on the sand,” adds Dan Keating, captain and president of Newport Polo.

The 28th Newport Winter Festival runs from Feb. 12-21.

Polo is a popular summertime attraction and one of Newport's oldest traditions, as the home of the first polo club in America, dating back to 1876.  On Saturdays throughout the summer the Newport International Polo Series host exhibition matches featuring teams from around the world and from major US cities playing against the home team.  June 4, 2016 will officially open its 25th anniversary season, running through September.
