NBC 10 News just took delivery of the flagship of our upgraded news gathering fleet. Currently undergoing final equipment testing, the new vehicle will be one of the most advanced news gathering tools in all of New England, not just Rhode Island and the South Coast. When the new NBC 10 News satellite truck pulls up to a news event, it will be a true mobile command center. The equipment can handle multiple live sources and transmit back to WJAR—and the world—through an unprecedented number of ways. Over the past two years NBC 10 has invested millions of dollars to improve our news capabilities. This is just one very large, very visible sign of that investment to deliver the best news coverage to our viewers.
New year, new look, new name for the Hyatt Regency on Goat Island, soon to be known as Gurney’s Newport Resort and Marina. The property’s current owner, Amstar, is in the final stages of selling the hotel to George Filopoulos, President of Metrovest Equities Inc. of New York City and owner of Gurney’s Inn and Residences, a popular summer destination in Montauk, New York. The transformation is scheduled to be completed by May 2017.
Changes are already underway. A new 22-slip marina is nearing completion on the northeastern part of the island, and is scheduled to open in January, Filopoulos said. “We’ve also started work on building out the wedding banquet room,” he said.
Bringing more entertainment and events to the property throughout the year is one of Filopoulos’s main goals in the acquisition. “In Montauk, we do a lot of group business events in the fashion and tech industries,” he said. “Here we have 27,000 ft of meeting space – the biggest group space in Newport – so we’re excited to bring more group business here year-round.”

Aesthetically, Gurney’s Newport will be different from the Hyatt in a number of ways, but Filopoulos plans to keep the footprint the same and to preserve the views. “We’ll do a refresh of the rooms and we plan on taking more advantage of outside spaces by adding tiered lounge areas,” he said. The lobby will also get a revamp, and the fitness center will be expanded.
Though the hotel will be getting a new name and new look, Filopoulos said there are no plans for changes to staff and it will remain open as work on renovations and upgrades takes place. “Same employees, different brand, and we’re staying open,” he said.

The RI Hospitality Association (RIHA) recently honored several Newport residents, and people who work at Newport-based establishments, at its “Stars of the Industry” Annual Meeting and Awards Ceremony at Twin River Casino.
Hotel Viking received top honors at the ceremony with Hotelier of the Year going to General Manager, Robert Burnetti, and Hotel Employee of the Year going to Selina Kardel & Juan Pleitez.
The Stars of the Industry Awards recognize the outstanding achievements of members of the hospitality, foodservice and tourism industries. Award recipients were chosen not only for their dedication and contributions to their careers, but for their involvement in their local communities.
Cox recently announced that Sujata Gosalia will join the company as executive vice president and chief strategy officer, effective Jan. 2, 2017. In this role, Gosalia will oversee existing strategy and new business development organizations and be responsible for strategic business planning, competitive assessments, marketplace evaluations and new growth opportunities.
"The communications, connectivity, and entertainment needs of our customers are evolving rapidly. Sujata brings a great diversity of perspective as we explore new strategies to meet those needs. Gosalia brings more than 15 years of experience in driving growth, innovation and value creation within media, technology, communications and business services companies. Gosalia holds bachelor’s degrees in economics and international studies from the University of Pennsylvania, as well as a master’s degree in politics of the world economy from the London School of Economics. She serves as a board member of the national non-profit organization South Asian-Americans Leading Together.

Recently, Lufthansa took delivery of another A320neo from Airbus. This means that, five aircraft of this model have been delivered to Lufthansa this year, as planned.
Lufthansa is the first customer for this new generation Airbus A320neo. These new aircraft have been in service since the beginning of 2016 on routes within Germany as well as on European routes such as Oslo, Stockholm and Barcelona. Through new technology engine design and the latest cabin layout with up to 180 seats, the A320neo is, in fact, around 20 percent cheaper to run per passenger. Another important feature of the A320neo is the significant reduction in both noise and CO2 emissions. The 85 decibel 'noise footprint' of an A320neo at take-off is only half as loud as comparable levels of an A320 in the existing fleet, making an important contribution towards active noise reduction. The Lufthansa Group has a total of 116 neo-type aircraft on order, 45 of them in the larger A321neo model.
