The NBC10 Newport International Polo Series, Presented by BMW featured a heated rivalry between USA and Ireland, with Ireland vying to regain control of the Silver Cup on Saturday, July 22nd.
Team USA took to the field for a historic showdown against Ireland on July 22nd. This showdown is one of the most popular matches of Team USA’s 26-year-old rivalry with Ireland. The stands were overflowing and the lawn was buzzing; the entire match was one filled with energy and excitement!
Representing Team Ireland, in the #1 position was Marco Herbst, playing #2 was Siobhan Herbst, Colm Kelleher was at #3, and playing #4 was David Stone Sr.
Representing Team USA, Minnie Keating was at #1, Captain Michel Nseir was #2, Sam Clemens played #3, and Captain Dan Keating played position #4.
Team Ireland started off the match with a bang scoring two goals by Kelleher andM. Herbst, USA answered with a goal by D. Keating bringing the score to 2-1 withIreland holding onto the lead going into the second chukker.USA fought back in the second and third with two goals per chukker scored by D. Keating bringing the score to 5-2 with USA taking control of the lead going into half time.
Team Ireland kicked it into gear with a goalS. Herbst in the fifth chukker bringing the score to 3-7 going into the fifth chukker. The fifth chukker started off with a goal for Ireland scored byS. Herbst, answered byTeam USA with two goals byClemens bringing the score to 4-7 going into the final chukker.Ireland fought tooth and nail to regain control of the lead in the final chukker,Kelleher scored a goal andS. Herbst followed scoring the final three goals of the game, bringing the score to 8-7 with Ireland as the victors.
During the match, the door prize drawing of a Magnum of Veuve Clicquot Champagne was awarded to one lucky attendee from Providence, RI. A festive tailgate with beautiful Irish themed décor, flags, food and fun won the Best Tailgate Picnic Trunk from Stella Artois.
The Polo Series will feature 8 international teams this season including France, Italy, Ireland, Mexico, Jamaica, England, Dominican Republic and the debut of Peru, as well as 5 City Teams from major US cities and a few top regional rivals for an action-packed season through the end of September. This is the 26th season of Newport International Polo Series, which has hosted teams from over 30 nations including, Germany, Spain, England, Argentina, France, Egypt, India, Australia, Costa Rica, Ghana, Canada, Chile, Jamaica, Nigeria, Portugal, New Zealand, Barbados, Scotland, South Africa, Hungary, Dominican Republic, Netherlands, Kenya, Brazil, China, Italy, Mexico, Sweden, Singapore, Monaco, and Morocco.
Minutes from downtown Newport, the International Polo Grounds are located at historic Glen Farm, 250 Linden Lane (off of Rte. 138) in Portsmouth, RI. This bucolic setting is the last 100 acres of what was once a 700-acre manorial farm whose settlement dates back to the 1600's.
