The Newport International Polo Series XXVII opens on Saturday, June 2nd, 2018 at 5pm when Poland makes its debut against USA. After 6 periods, called chukkers, the match will conclude with the Veuve Clicquot Champagne Toast & Trophy Presentation, as well as an autograph signing to meet the players, and a special Après Polo celebration...a Bialowieza Forest Boar Roast, by advanced reservation only.
A ceremonial flag raising and national anthems will follow the introduction of players, including Poland's Marianna Olbrych, Jakub Czekaj, Maciej Olbrych and Pawel Olbrych. The origins of polo in Poland date back to the late 19th century when a family of Polish aristocrats established a team at their Lancut estate and traveled Central Europe competing against teams in Austria, Hungary, and Germany. In the early 1920's, the game was adopted by the Polish cavalry. The World Wars left a long wake of struggle for the nation and its sports and leisure. Polo re-emerged in 2002 and today there are seven hubs for the sport around the country, including arena polo, snow polo, and traditional grass polo! The Polish national team participated in the FIP European Championship in 2016 and is planning its strategy for 2018.
Official team headquarters will be at Hotel Viking, renown for superior guest accommodations, exceptional cuisine, rooftop entertainment, European spa and desirable Bellevue Avenue address. The team will tour the famed Newport Mansions, enjoy helicopter tours with Birds Eye View, paddle boarding and surfing with Island Surf & Sport, tennis on the legendary courts of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, sailing 12 meter racing yachts with America's Cup Charters, cruising the sights by scooter, bike, or scoot coupes from Scooter World, cocktailing & dancing at the Season Kickoff Bash on the eve of the match at the one and only Clarke Cooke House, and all the great goings on in the City by the Sea.
During the match, a weekly door prize drawing of a magnum of Veuve Clicquot Champagne and prize for the Best Tailgate from Stella Artois will be awarded. Specialty vendors and concessionaires will be present in the Hospitality village at the polo grounds, including the Twisted Pony Cocktail Bar, Horseshoe Wine Bar, Newport Polo Pro Shop, Brahmin and gourmet food trucks. For details about concessions & amenities, venue and other information, use the About Newport Polo link in the Menu bar.
