Overseas Report: Destination Jamaica

Date:    Saturday, March 10, 2018

Team USA narrowly missed Riley's wrath on a tailwind to Jamaica just before the storm befell the northeast.  Team Captain Dan Keating led the campaign to Caribbean polo with teammates John Wigdahl, Michel Nseir, and Jim DeAngelis.  The team received a warm welcome to Montego Bay's Toby Resort from friendly islanders that participate in the annual USA vs Jamaica match in Newport every August.

USA faced a tough assignment where playing conditions make year-round polo a luxury not afforded to northern dwelling Americans.  The Jamaicans were kind enough to loan their prized horses to the visiting team, and then fielded their best and brightest to even the odds.  Peak fitness and youth won the Jamaicans a satisfying victory on their home turf at Chukka Blue Polo Club, after leaving the silver on the field in Newport the previous summer.

At the Kingston Polo Club, a fresh squad of locals prevailed over the travelers for a second time inside of 24 hours, despite the latest fieldside physio restorative marvels, a clever strategy for the victory lap inside the clubhouse.

Teams USA and Jamaica Lined Up Before the Match

Between matches, the team was treated to feasts of Jamaica's bounty, a sunset sail and swim in clear turquoise waters, legendary song and dance, unmatched hospitality and delightful adventure.  From Bellevue Avenue to Bamboo Avenue, the Newport team explored the stunning south coast including Lover's Leap, the Appleton Rum estate, a ride with Floyd to his Pelican Bar, ideal morning sea reports from expert Jake at Treasure Beach, zip lining over the natural wonders of YS Falls with Chukka Adventures while touring the historic estate and stud farm, spelunking in the undersea caves of Negril by day and reggae-ing to Andy Vernon live by night, from our enclave at Country Country in Negril.

The ever-popular Jamaican Polo Team will return to Newport on August 18th, for the annual USA vs. Jamaica match followed by the Jamaican Jerk Grill Après Polo celebration during the Newport International Polo Series.
