Plans are in the works for the return of Beach Polo in the Newport Winter Festival for the weekend of Feb. 23 & 24 at 2pm, weather permitting. Newport Polo and Winterfest organizers are working with City of Newport officials to hold the popular 2-day outdoor polo exhibition at Easton’s Beach (locally known as 1st Beach), in Newport, RI.
For the second year, The Chanler at Cliff Walk will offer drinks & refreshments from its birds-eye-view beach overlook location. Catch the game from their Cliff Walk Terrace, or join their Aprés Polo celebration with the players after the match! Cash bar will be serving up hot chocolate and warm adult libations to enjoy 'round the firepit, with s’more kits & cookies. The Chanler welcomes guests Sat & Sun, 2PM – 6PM
The Beach Polo exhibition polo matches, organized by Newport Polo, will feature teams competing each day in a match composed of 4 chukkers (periods of play) for a duration of 1+ hour, during low tide. Spectators are encouraged to witness the fast-paced contests in the picturesque setting of Newport's renown beaches, and cheer on the teams, playing on finely tuned thoroughbred mounts.
Beach Polo is a low-impact, eco-friendly exhibition, and a much-anticipated highlight on the opening weekend of the Newport Winter Festival. Over 1,000 spectators line the playing field each day, carved out of the intertidal area of the beach. The players are from the Newport Polo Club and other regional contenders, playing on finely tuned thoroughbred polo horses. Horses are accustomed to sandy footing in their natural habitats all over the world, including the desert southwest. The polo ponies are highly fit and exercised in arena polo, played on similar footing materials.
