Bijou Begins Her Polo Career

Winner of the 2019 Name Our Pony Contest

Date:    Tuesday, February 19, 2019

Congratulations to Eliana D. for submitting the winning entry, Bijou, in our 2019 Pony Naming Contest.  Eliana will receive a General Admission season pass to enjoy the excitement of the Newport International Polo Series 28 all summer long.

Eliana's inspiration came from the 2019 Polo Ball, Diamond's Are Forever, as Bijou means jewel in French.  With her glossy coat, bright white blaze, and winning personality, Bijou is sure to shine on the polo field.  Bijou has already been schooled in the arena on basic polo drills, and her training will resume in the spring.  Her training will take about two years with solo drills, then small group practices with other young horses before moving on to club polo and eventually the Polo Series Saturday field.  Making a polo pony, as it is known in the sport, takes a great deal of patience and time, but the reward of a first successful chukker is well worth the wait.  It is said that the horse is 75% of a polo player's handicap and these prized athletes are treated like jewels by the players that ride them.
