2019 Fall Polo Forecast

Date:    Wednesday, September 4, 2019

Many fans of the summer Saturday matches may not realize that Newport Polo carries on year-round with lessons, intro clinics, team-building experiences, regional and national tournaments.  The action will shift to Newport Polo's private training facility where players will trade the freedom of grass polo for the fast maneuvering agile arena.  Weekly lesson programs designed for varying skill levels are accepting new players from first-time riders to experienced horsemen. Interscholastic team tryouts and practices will prepare the high school team for the competition season, vying for a spot in the March national tournaments. Regional and national tournaments abound for experienced players to savor the excitement of competition.

Weekly Lessons bring out all ages and experience levels to enjoy the thrill of polo under the skilled tutelage of our USPA certified instructors.  The program includes beginner, intermediate, and advanced lessons in small groups to receive individual attention while learning the game in a team environment.  Private lessons are available to hone specific skills, whether it's horsemanship or the mechanics of polo. New players advance rapidly, often going on to participate in arena season tournaments, and the Newport International Polo Series. Many students learn to ride as they play as previous riding experience is not required and each session includes instruction on riding for polo.

Interscholastic Polo Teams are accepting boys and girls in grades 7 - 12 for tryouts to join the varsity and JV competition teams. Scheduled weekly practices and games against regional rivals prepare the players for regional and national tournaments in the winter and spring. Newport Polo's work-to-ride program assists new students of all backgrounds to learn the sport.  Eligible students may receive USPA scholarships and varsity letters in the course of participating.

Adult Tournaments give members of the Newport Polo Club and advanced polo students the opportunity to compete against local and regional teams to hone their skills with the camaraderie or polo brethren.  Newport Polo hosts intra-club, regional, and national arena tournaments open to all qualified players in the fall and spring to put their polo skills to the test. Highlights include the National Sherman Memorial, NE Circuit Women's Arena Challenge, annual Player's Tournament, Thanksgiving Tournament, to name a few.  Registration is now open online.
