The Hotshots entered the New England Pro-Am with victory on their minds scoring the first couple goals of the match, but the Masters proved that experience can be more important than youth on Saturday, September 21 in the Newport International Polo Series XXVIII, presented by Brahmin. The Master's consistent game paid off in a 6-3 victory.
Each team, anchored by a professional polo player with top amateurs from the region, divided into the rising stars (Hotshots) and experienced veterans (Masters). Representing the Hotshots in white in the #1 position was Charlie Bullis, with Luke Merrick at #2, Minnie Keating at #3, and Hamish Wates at #4. Sporting red for the masters was Dan Keating at #1, Sam Clemens at #2, Dave Bullis at #3, and Rory Torrey at #4. Following the introduction of both teams, the national anthem was played, and the 2019 New England Pro-Am began.
Merrick came out of the gate strong for the Hotshots, taking the lead with the first goal. Wates continued the offensive to double the Hotshots' lead, 2-0. The Masters stepped into their stride in the second chukker when Torrey made two penalty conversion for a 2-all tie. Then, Clemens scored the only gol of the third chukker for a 3-2 Masters lead at the end of the first half.
Clemens led the charge for the Masters once again to widen the lead over the Hotshots, 4-2 at the end of the 4th chukker. The Hotshots pushed harder defense in the 5th chukker and amped up the attacking speed to regain the upper hand. The efforts kept the Masters out of the goal, but didn't win any more points for the Hotshots as the teams left the field to change horses for the final chukker. D. Keating scored on an early offensive in the final chukker, quickly followed by another from D. Bullis. Down 6-2, the Hotshots had a long road to get within reach of a tie to force overtime. Offensive charges were continually rebuffed by the Masters. M. Keating managed one more goal just before the final bell, leaving the Masters with a 6-3 win.
The match concluded with the Veuve Clicquot Champagne Toast & Trophy Presentation. Commemorative prizes and the perpetual liberty bowl were awarded by Sarah Dale from Where Boston.
