The Mexican team returns to defend its 2015 victory, led by Captain Miguel Gomez de Parada and top players from Mexico City, home of Mexico's oldest polo club. Polo has been popular in Mexico since the late nineteenth century, and this rivalry represents a historic return to its roots, since it was a baronial family from Mexico that witnessed polo first in Newport in the 1880's, and then introduced the sport in Mexico! Today Mexico is home to some of the world's most renown players.
“They will be a tough team to beat, and we will have to bring our best game to meet the challenge,” explained Dan Keating, USA team captain and founder of the Polo Series.
During the match, a weekly door prize drawing will be awarded from Hotel Viking for a $100 Gift Certificate (valid at One Bellevue Restaurant, One Bellevue Lounge or Top of Newport), and the coveted Picnic Trunk and 12-pack from Stella Artois will be awarded for the Best Tailgate!. After 6 periods, called chukkers, the match will conclude with the Veuve Clicquot Champagne Toast & Trophy Presentation by Atria Senior Living, as well as an autograph signing and cocktail hour to mingle with the players, and the day concludes with an après polo authentic feast with the teams - Buffet Grande.
Atria Senior Living is home to more than 400 of Rhode Island’s wisest older adults. Offering independent living, assisted living and memory care in four area locations, Atria creates vibrant residential communities where seniors can thrive and participate, know their contributions are valued, and enjoy access to opportunities and support that help them keep making a difference in our world.
Specialty vendors and concessionaires will be present in the Hospitality village at the polo grounds, including the Twisted Pony Bar, Newport Polo Pro Shop, and other specialty vendors and gourmet food trucks. For details about concessions & amenities, venue and other information, use the About Newport Polo link in the Menu bar.
Official team headquarters will be at Hotel Viking, renown for superior guest accommodations, exceptional cuisine, rooftop entertainment, European spa and desirable Bellevue Avenue address. The team will tour the famed Newport Mansions, enjoy helicopter tours with Birds Eye View, paddle boarding and surfing with Island Surf & Sport, tennis on the legendary courts of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, sail on 12 meter racing yachts with America's Cup Charters, enjoy fine dining and dancing at the Clarke Cooke House, and all the great goings on in the City by the Sea.
The Polo Series will feature 8 international teams this season including Mexico, Australia, Ireland, Italy, France, Jamaica, England, and the debut of Morocco, as well as 5 City Teams from major US cities and a few top regional rivals for an action-packed season through the end of September.
The Polo Series will have hosted 32 nations this year over its 25 seasons including England, Ireland, Scotland, Chile, Kenya, Jamaica, Italy and Singapore this summer, and Costa Rica, Portugal, Germany, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt, India, New Zealand, Australia, Chile, Barbados, France, Canada, Hungary, Dominican Republic, Netherlands, Kenya, Brazil, and China, Sweden, Singapore, Monaco and Morocco.
Dating back more than 130 years in Newport, the polo matches are one of Newport’s grandest & most popular traditions, a living legacy from the Gilded Age, and open to the public. Audiences of several thousand spectators enjoy the contests against international teams, as well as teams representing major US cities, playing against the home team every Sat, June thru Sept. at 5 PM / 4 PM in Sept.

This bucolic setting is the last 100 acres of what was once a 700-acre manorial farm whose settlement dates back to the 1600's. Its classical stone barns from the Gilded Age and its park-like grounds were rehabilitated by Newport Polo founder, Dan Keating, and thrive today as an equestrian & community recreational property, and home of the Polo Series.
