Newport vs. Boston Match Report

Boston returned to kick off the City Series this past Saturday, June 17th, in the NBC 10 Newport International Polo Series, presented by the Rhode Island BMW Centers. 

Representing Boston, in the #1 position was Franz Colloredo - Mansfield, playing #2 was Simon Colloredo - Mansfield with Amanda Roberts as his alternate, Team Captain Nick Snow was at #3, and playing #4 was C.B Scherer

For Newport, Team Captian Dan Keating was at #1, Carlos Maldonado was #2, Rory Torrey played #3, and Dave Bullis played position #4.

Scherer started the attack for Boston, scoring the first goal of the match. Torrey answered Boston's goal, but Scherer scored a bell ringer to end the first chukker bringing the score to 2-1 with Boston taking an early lead. Team Newport kicked into gear and scored three consecutive goals in the second chukker, two from Maldonado and one from Torrey. Boston answered Newport's goals with a goal from Snow to end the chukker with a score of 4-3 in favor of Newport. S. Colloredo - Mansfield scored the first goal of the third chukker, his goal was answered by Maldonado. The score going into halftime was 5-4 with Newport in the lead.

Boston started off the second half with a goal from Snow, Newport answered with two goals from Maldonado. Snow scored the final goal of the fourth chukker bring the score to 7-6 with Newport holding onto the lead. Newport kicked off the fifth chukker with two goals scored by Maldonado and Torrey, Boston answered with two goals from Snow to bring the score to 9-8 with Newport holding onto the lead going into the sixth chukker. Newport pushed it into overdrive, scoring three consecutive goals by MaldonadoKeating, and Bullis. Boston answered with two goals from Snow, Newport answered with a bell ringer by Torrey to end the match with a final score of 13-10 with Newport as the victors!

During the match, a lucky winner took home a Team Newport jersey in the weekly door prize drawing. An adorable nautical themed tailgate with summery decor, food, and fun won the Best Tailgate Picnic Trunk from Stella Artois. Following the match, NBC 10's Sunrise Meteorologist, Zack Green, presented the Liberty Bowl to Newport during the Veuve Clicquot Champagne Toast and Trophy Presentation.

During the team's visit to Newport, they enjoyed many of the best attractions and highlights in the City by the Sea. The team toured the famed Newport Mansions, enjoyed helicopter tours with Birds Eye View, paddle boarded and surfed with Island Surf & Sport, played tennis on the legendary courts of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, sailed on 12 meter racing yachts with America's Cup Charters, enjoyed fine dining at the new sensation Scarpetta, and lodging at Gurney's Newport Resort & Marina, for easy access to all the great attractions that Newport is renown for.

The Polo Series will feature 8 international teams this season including France, Italy, Ireland, Mexico, Jamaica, England, Dominican Republic and the debut of Peru, as well as 5 City Teams from major US cities and a few top regional rivals for an action-packed season through the end of September.  This is the 26th season of Newport International Polo Series, which has hosted teams from over 30 nations including, Germany, Spain, England, Argentina, France, Egypt, India, Australia, Costa Rica, Ghana, Canada, Chile, Jamaica, Nigeria, Portugal, New Zealand, Barbados, Scotland, South Africa, Hungary, Dominican Republic, Netherlands, Kenya, Brazil, China, Italy, Mexico, Sweden, Singapore, Monaco, and Morocco.

Minutes from downtown Newport, the International Polo Grounds are located at historic Glen Farm, 250 Linden Lane (off of Rte. 138) in Portsmouth, RI.  This bucolic setting is the last 100 acres of what was once a 700-acre manorial farm whose settlement dates back to the 1600's.  Its classical stone barns from the Gilded Age and its park-like grounds were rehabilitated by polo series founder, Dan Keating, and thrive today as an equestrian & community recreational property, and home of the Polo Series.
