The NBC10 Newport International Polo Series, Presented by BMW featured a heated rivalry between the Red States against the Blue States, vying for the Independence Cup on Saturday, July 1st.
Representing the Blue States, in the #1 position was Michel Nseir, playing #2 was Sam Clemens, Chip Stiegler was at #3, and playing #4 was Peter Friedman.
For the Red States, Amy Rice was at #1, Brendan Tetrault was #2, Heather Souto played #3, and Minnie Keating played position #4.
The Blue States started the game off with a goal by Stiegler that was answered with a goal from Keating of the Red States. The Blue States gained momentum, scoring two goals scored by Nseir and Friedman to end of the first chukker, bringing the score to 3-1 in favor of the Blue States. Stiegler kicked off the second chukker by scoring a goal, Souto answered the Blue States' goal, bringing the score to 4-2 going into the third chukker. The Red States took control in the final chukker of the first half with both Rice and Souto, making the score 4-4 going into halftime.
The Red States took the lead in the fourth chukker with a goal from Keating for a score of 5-4. The Blue States fought back with a goal by Stiegler that was answered with a goal by Souto, bringing the score to 6-5 with the Red States holding onto the lead going into the final chukker of the match. Leading the attack for the Blue States was Friedman, scoring one goal. Souto scored the final goal of the match for the Red States, bringing the final score to 7-6 with the Red States as the victors!
During the match, a lucky winner from Duxbury, MA took home a gift certificate to the Clarke Cooke House, courtesy of Atria Senior Living, in the weekly door prize drawing. A beautiful tailgate with gorgeous flowers, patriotic decor, a mouth-watering spread of food and drink won the Best Tailgate Picnic Trunk from Stella Artois.
Following the match, the teams took to the podium for the Veuve Clicquot Champagne Toast and Trophy Presentation, where John Hartmayer of Atria Senior Living presented the victorious Red States with the Atria Cup.
The Polo Series will feature 8 international teams this season including France, Italy, Ireland, Mexico, Jamaica, England, Dominican Republic and the debut of Peru, as well as 5 City Teams from major US cities and a few top regional rivals for an action-packed season through the end of September. This is the 26th season of Newport International Polo Series, which has hosted teams from over 30 nations including, Germany, Spain, England, Argentina, France, Egypt, India, Australia, Costa Rica, Ghana, Canada, Chile, Jamaica, Nigeria, Portugal, New Zealand, Barbados, Scotland, South Africa, Hungary, Dominican Republic, Netherlands, Kenya, Brazil, China, Italy, Mexico, Sweden, Singapore, Monaco, and Morocco.
