America's oldest polo club is still at the forefront of introducing the 3,000 year-old sport to new players. Newport Polo, reputed as a leading instructional polo program by the United States Polo Association (USPA), is expanding its lesson initiatives this year, starting with an introductory package for first-time players in April and May.
Oriented for athletic adults, the Discover Polo spring introductory package includes 3 lessons for the price of 2, plus a box seat ticket to the June 14th exhibition match at the Newport International Polo Series, all for the price of $130. The Intro Lessons will take place on Wednesdays & Fridays at 6pm through May 16. For newcomers only; Limit 1 package per person. Register online. For more information, please contact Newport Polo at (401) 847-7090 or via email to email@example.com.
Instructors include world champion John Wigdahl, other professional player/coaches, and Dan Keating, President of Newport Polo. Lesson horses are of the finest thoroughbred caliber & training, and professional grade polo equipment is provided. The lessons are conducted in small group classes of 6 students, to provide individual attention to each student’s progress and to practice newly learned skills in scrimmages. Directions to Newport Polo’s private equestrian training facility in Portsmouth are provided upon appointment. Additional lesson programs will be rolled out in the summer months.
“Riding experience is not required for beginners, since each lesson includes riding instruction specific to polo,” explained Dan Keating, President of Newport Polo, "but as a student’s polo skills progress, their riding skills will need to become proficient."
According to the USPA, the sport has grown in the US by 20% in the past few years, in addition to its global footprint in over 80 countries, with the help of clubs like Newport Polo that allocate resources for new participants to try the sport. Newport Polo’s membership today is made up mostly of players who got their start through the lesson program’s group lessons over the past 20+ years. Information about the lesson program can be found at http://www.nptpolo.com/about-newport-polo/lessons.
“For adults aspiring to add a challenging & sporty leisure pursuit to their personal accomplishments, polo offers a lifelong activity that is rewarding and enriching, to compliment one’s career goals.”
