Argentina Stages Come From Behind Victory

In a thrilling, high-scoring, come from behind effort, Argentina edged USA 14-13 in the opening match of the Newport International Polo Series XXII, Presented by Your Rhode Island BMW Centers on Saturday, June 1st, 2013. 

 

“With an arch rival and world-renown polo powerhouse like Argentina to launch the 22nd season, and a battery of top contenders following after this challenge, this was an exciting start to the season, even if the win slipped away” explains USA team captain Dan Keating. “I know our fans witnessed a major dual, and we were prepared to play a foremost opponent.”  

Argentina has risen to dominance as a world-powerhouse in the sport of polo in the past few decades.  Despite being underdogs, USA led for 5 periods before Argentina came from behind to win 14-13 in a thrilling performance by both teams.

The 2-hour match concluded with a champagne trophy presentation of the USA vs. Argentina silver cup, inaugurated in 1992, and presented by Jeff Possiel from Vita Coco, as well as the naming of the Best Playing Pony, Fleur, loaned by Peter Friedman.  A winner for best tailgate received a 1-hour gift card from Massage Envy and the door prize drawing awarded a 4 tickets to the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships next month.

Playing for Argentina were Facundo Rawson at #1, Marcos Vidal at #2,Mauricio Devrient at #3 and Juan Vidal at #4.  The USA squad was Chip Stiegler at #1, Dan Keating at #2, Jim DeAngelis at #3 and Jonathan Kaye at #4.
