Playing for Philadelphia were Hesham El Gharby at #1, Mark Mulligan at #2, LeAndro Berrios at #3 and Juan Vidal at #4. The Newport squad was Michel Nseir at #1, Sam Shore at #2, Dan Keating at #3 and John Wigdahl at #4.
Scoring in the opening chukker went back and forth between Barrios and Wigdahl, each contributing two points for their teams, with big, lofted passes and streaking breakaways, starting with Barrios for Phillly, answered by Wigdahl Newport, then repeating the cycle.
Philly pulled ahead in the second chukker with a neat pair of goals by Mulligan as Newport was held scoreless. Another point by Vidal in the third period sparked a Newport rally of 2 points by Keating, then1 by Shore to tie the score 5-5 at the end of the half.
In the fourth chukker, Philly shelled Newport with a battery of goals, started by Vidal and then 3 more by Berrios, as Newport stalled. The fifth period continued the onslaught with a goal by El Gharby, answered by Wigdahl with 2 comeback points.
Both teams were battle-weary in the final period, but each mustered up another point, as Vidal scored his 4th goal of the match, and Wigdahl concluded with his 5th, for a 12-8 final score.
Meanwhile the Tailgate Contest prize bottle of Hangar 1 Vodka was awarded to a New Year themed tailgate party, and the door prize drawing awarded a $100 Massage Envy gift card to a lucky New Yorker! The 2-hour match conclude with a champagne trophy presentation by Veuve Cliqquot, assisted by Boston Common's Amy Fischer handing out the silver.
BMW had a fabulous collection of 2014 model vehicles on display for Test Drives, from 1-4pm at the polo grounds! And Alex and Ani hosted the Positive Energy Polo Lounge.
The City Series features challengers from around the US playing in a classic 6-chukker match against the home team, Newport. The next City Series match will be on Sept. 6th featuring Newport vs. Baltimore.
