The sun shone brightly over Glen Farm on Saturday, May 28 for the annual Newport Rotary Club Charity Match, hosted by the Newport Polo Club. The 6-chukker match featuring local players was an exciting pre-season face-off, heading into the Newport International Polo Series Silver Jubilee.
All profits from ticket sales and concessions were collected by Rotarians to directly benefit the Newport Rotary Club's scholarship & charitable programs. Such programs include scholarships for local students, support for the Boys & Girls Club of Newport County, Newport Public Library, Martin Luther King Center, and more.
Representing Newport were Suleman Iddrissu at #1, Sam Clemens at #2, Chip Steigler at #3, and Sam Shore at #4. For the challenger, the Island Cowgirls, Amy Rice played #1, Minnie Keating was at #2, Charlie Bullis at #3, and Heather Souto rounded out the team at #4.
The match got under way quickly in the first chukker with Rice making an immediate attack on goal, scoring the first 2 points for the Island Cowgirls. Shore managed to best the Cowgirl's defense, winning a few points for Newport. The Cowgirls weren't letting up as Bullis and Keating double their score, ending the first chukker 4-2. Bullis & Souto continued the Cowgirl's advance, raising their score to 7. A strong Cowgirl defense was circumvented by Clemens & Shore adding a goal each for Newport before the bell signaled the chukker's end. Bullis opened the 3rd chukker with another Cowgirl goal, but a re-grouped defense by Newport held the line for a 3-8 score at half-time.
Defense continued into the third chukker as each team held a fierce gallop and swing. Iddrissu and Shore each added a goal for Newport in the second half. But, Keating, Bullis and Souto pushed past the posts, scoring 5 points for the Island Cowgirls in the second half, ending the match in a 13-6 victory.
