As the threshold of its sesquicentennial jubilee approaches, Newport Polo is masterminding its 34th season of bringing you an exhilarating mix of international showdowns for next summer. From June to September, the 2025 season will jet in 8 rival teams from every corner of the map. Expect some familiar foes and a brand-new contender joining us from afar, adding a 38th flag to Newport’s iconic collonade along the southern border of BD Field!

With each match, we celebrate the universal spirit of competition—where the thrill of sport meets cultural exchange. The first-ever international polo competition, known as the Westchester Cup, was hosted in Newport, RI by America's First Polo Club back in 1886, for a tournament that transformed the City by the Sea with visitors both foreign and domestic for a week of events from sporting to social, earning headlines on every shore. England rose to the challenge, handily defeating USA. The historic tournament, coupled with breakthroughs in transatlantic transportation, opened the doors to a new era of sporting rivalry, predating the modern Olympic games, and inspiring many more international sporting contests, including 19 chapters to its own legacy, with the Americans now leading in the 19 rematches of the historic Westchester Cup.

In high spirits from the recent Olympic fervor of the Paris Games earlier this year, the Newport International Polo Series offers its own global stage to showcase a summer of international rivalries of national pride, sportsmanship and goodwill. Our archives are teeming with the stories of the 37 teams who’ve made Newport their battleground. Over the course of this winter, our historians will research and reconstruct our earliest records and brand the names onto the perpetual bowls to be fought for in next season’s rivalries. 

It’s no surprise that sport brings people together like nothing else, with fair play and mutual respect that crosses borders, fostering peace, understanding, and genuine friendship. Uniting in sport is a holistic experience, with a common purpose. This gave polo wings to spread from the Asiatic plains of its origins on a 2,000-year journey across the planet to every populated continent, finding a welcome landing in the convivial community of Newport in 1876 where its roots have grown deep. While the world gathered in Paris last summer, melting boundaries between cultures through sport, we carried on our 34th annual ritual of bringing the world to Newport, to foster goodwill among peoples, building on a legacy of peace, tolerance, and fellowship through the sport of polo’s diverse international footprint in 80+ nations.

As we look forward, the goal remains unwavering—to welcome the world, unite under the language of sport, and believe in the possibility of peaceful competition.
