About Us

Polo Since 600 b.c.

By the time the sport of polo arrived on Newport’s shores during the Gilded Age in the 1800s, it was ripe with 2500 years of evolution, captivating newcomers as it swept the globe.  Newport’s summer sporting set embraced the new pastime, establishing America's first polo club in 1876.  A charter member of the United States Polo Association, Newport Polo remains a trailblazing model polo club, hosting the Newport International Polo Series public exhibition matches for the community's enjoyment, supporting philanthropic causes, hosting tournaments, polo club member services, and polo instruction year-round.

Each Saturday in June through September since 1992, the Newport International Polo Series features teams from around the world & from major US cities competing against USA / Newport.  Each season brings an exciting lineup of action-packed polo matches, international team debuts, and memorable special events for fun on and off the field, supported by an enthusiastic spectator audience.  See Events/Tickets for the complete list, subject to change.

Dear Friends of Polo,

On the cusp of our 33rd season, we are reminded of how extraordinary our sport is, as we plan to receive first-time rivals from the other side of the globe, anticipate the camaraderie of storied rematches, and the thrill of next-generation players reaching new heights.  We will share the joy of familiar faces and elation of enthusiastic newcomers to our tradition.

Uniting in sport is a holistic experience, the solvent to a common purpose. This gave polo wings to spread from the Asiatic plains of its origins on a 2,000-year journey across the planet to a welcome landing in the convivial community of Newport in 1876 where its roots grew deep, flourishing international competition. While the world gathers in Paris this summer, melting boundaries between cultures through sport, we will carry on our annual ritual to foster goodwill among peoples.

As the first polo club in America, Newport Polo carries on its legacy, keeping the sport relevant by seeing beyond the thrill of victory to the needs of current and future generations that reemerge shoulder to shoulder in appreciation of our sport.  Newport Polo’s charitable initiatives surpassed the $2 million milestone last year.

I applaud our charity gala volunteers and salute the many nonprofits with whom we annually partner including the Newport Rotary Club and Newport This Week for tremendous teamwork in producing our annual Season Magazine, whose advertising dollars support college scholarships and philanthropic programs.  I thank our sponsors without whom the Polo Series would not be as expansive.  Ultimately, I salute the dedicated staff of the Newport International Polo Series with whom it is an honor to work.

Very Truly Yours,

Dan Keating, President
